On 10 September, 2015 the president of the International Committee for the Banner of Peace a Non-Governmental organization of the United Nations dr. Alicia Rodriguez Fernandez handed in the Banner of Peace to the Speaker of the Parliament of Lithuania Mrs. Loreta Graužiniene and on behalf of the Committee nominated Lithuania the Republic of Peace.
Thus dr. A. Rodriges evaluated Lithuanian contribution promoting the culture of peace in the world. In 2006 The Parliament of Lithuania proclaimed 15 April as the Day of Culture in commemoration of Roerich's Pact signed by 21 countries in America in 1935. On this day every year the Banner of Peace is flagged all over the country with a lot of cultural events taking place. In 2012 a Committee of Banner of Peace was established (serving as coordinator of the International Committee for the Banner of Peace in Lithuania) as well as 6 Towns of Peace and 7 Schools of Peace were nominated in Lithuania. Following Lithuanian example international movement for the World Day of Culture as the 15 April with the symbol of Banner of Peace evolved.
Receiving the Banner of Peace the Speaker of the Parliament emphasized, that „Peace is an eternal worth of all times in all continents of the world. It is a relationship without war and disagreement. Unfortunately, as our history and present geopolitical situation witness, humanity cannot escape wars. Peace associates with everybody‘s responsibility, perception of their values, world outlook and choices of decision - how each of us personally will contribute to peace on earth. “
Banner of Peace is exhibited in the President Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas Hall in the Parliament of Lithuania.
